Nineteenth century oil on canvas in original hand carved gilt frame. Landscape at Etretat signed Charles Roussel. Charles Emmanuel Joseph Roussel was a marine painter born in Tourcoing on February 16, 1861. He was a student of Cabanel, Weerts, and Tattegrain. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and exhibited with the Socété beginning in 1887. He exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries in the years 1907 and 1908, and also had exhibitions in Saint Petersbourg, Saint Louis, and Buenos Aires. The Museum of Nice houses his painting “Barques de cabotage” (“Coastal Boats”) and the Museum of Tourcoing houses a marine painting entititled “Les Apprêts pour la pêche a Berck-sur-mer” (“Preparations for Fishing at Berck-sur-mer”).
