Hand carved oak Brittany lit clos and bench. Hand carved miniature lit clos from Brittany. The “lit clos” or “closed bed” was a bed on high legs with sliding doors used in Brittany. The bench was used to climb up into bed and also to store blankets inside. The high legs on the bed helped one to avoid damp dirt floors and the doors were often lined with blankets to avoid the cold drafts prevalent in this province on the Atlantic Ocean. The ship’s wheel is a common motif in furniture from Brittany, a region where shipping and fishing play major roles in the lives of the Breton people
